Description
Saint Jerome by the Pollard Willow by Albrecht Dürer places the saint within a rugged shelter of rock and tree. Seated behind a simple ledge, Jerome brings his hands together beside a small crucifix. His lion rests in the foreground, while the cut-back willow at the right frames the figure with its rough trunk and bare, branching crown.
Dated 1512, the work is a drypoint, a medium whose softer-looking marks give the shaded passages a distinctive texture. The closely gathered forms create a secluded space, with light falling across the saint’s head and upper body. In this compact landscape, the ordinary textures of stone, bark and animal fur become part of an atmosphere of withdrawal and contemplation.
