Description
In Perched upon a Bust of Pallas, Édouard Manet isolates an encounter from Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven. The dark bird sits above the doorway on the classical bust, while a man below looks upward toward it. Broad hatching and the spare room create an unsettled space between the watcher and the silent, elevated visitor.
Made in 1875 as a transfer lithograph, the illustration belongs to Manet’s collaboration with Stéphane Mallarmé’s French translation of Poe’s poem. Its force comes from placing the ominous bird high above the human figure rather than describing every furnishing in the room. The rough, direct marks make the scene feel immediate, allowing the poem’s charged stillness to take visual form in a simple arrangement of height, shadow, and attention.
