Description
A blue-clad page faces Goetz von Berlichingen as he helps the knight dress in armor in Eugène Delacroix’s watercolor. The figures occupy a dim stone interior, with a red stool at the right. The practical task brings their bodies close together, giving a literary scene of preparation a tangible setting and an immediate human relationship.
Made in 1826–27, the work uses watercolor and bodycolor with gum arabic on wove paper. Delacroix gives the scene a colored material presence distinct from a purely linear illustration. The subject’s appeal lies in the interval before action, where clothing and equipment are being made ready and the bond between the figures becomes visible through service. A familiar act of assistance acquires another significance within a story associated with conflict and resolve.
