Description
In Wild Horse Felled by a Tiger, the predator mauls its fallen prey in Eugène Delacroix’s dark lithograph, the animals’ bodies concentrated within a compact struggle. Bushland surrounds the encounter without distracting from its immediate violence. The opposing creatures give the scene distinct roles of force and vulnerability, allowing their physical relationship to carry the drama without the intervention of human figures.
Made in 1828, the lithograph was printed on chine collé. Delacroix brings the animal conflict into the close scale of a work on paper, allowing the scene to be considered beyond the instant implied by its action. The work’s appeal lies in its concentration on force and vulnerability within the natural world. A moment of struggle becomes an image whose tension rests on the distinct roles of the two animals and the encounter connecting them.
