Description
Hamlet strains toward an armored ghost at the left while companions restrain him on the right before battlements. Eugène Delacroix gives Shakespeare’s encounter between son and father’s apparition a forceful arrangement of bodies. The opposing directions make following and holding back part of the same scene, allowing the named dramatic action to become immediately visible through the group.
The 1835 lithograph gives a moment from the play a lasting graphic form. Its interest lies in concentrating an unfolding event into an image that can be revisited, where the relationship between figures remains available at a different pace. Delacroix turns the named episode into a visual encounter, allowing the human presence of Hamlet and the ghostly father to share attention without requiring the whole drama to be retold.
