Description

The dancer Mariano Camprubi stands full length in elaborate Spanish costume, one hand at his waist and his feet turned outward. The relatively pale setting and darker hatching let his figure remain the print’s clear center. Manet makes the performer’s identity visible through costume and bearing rather than a crowded depiction of a particular stage or audience.

The design dates to 1862–1863; in this Strölin edition of 1905, the etching is on blue laid paper and represents its only recorded state. Manet’s use of a printed medium gives the subject a different material life from a painted stage scene, preserving a composition that can recur across separate impressions. The sitter’s identity provides a historical anchor, but the image remains an encounter with a figure as arranged on the sheet. Its appeal lies in joining a named individual with the directness of etched marks.
