Description

The Water Drinker by Édouard Manet shows a boy tilting his head back and raising a vessel toward his face, with a small jug resting on the ground to the left. Sparse etched lines give the standing figure a direct presence against the open paper. Manet makes drinking water a recognizable bodily action, connecting the raised container with the vessel on the ground beside the boy.

The design dates to 1870–1874; this impression from the Strölin edition of 1905 combines etching and drypoint. The two techniques bring different kinds of line into contact, giving the scene a graphic surface distinct from a painting or wash drawing. Manet makes the familiar act sufficient for sustained looking, allowing the figure’s presence to carry interest in its own right. The print connects daily life with the concentrated attention of an image, preserving a small subject beyond the passing moment it represents.
