Description

A reclining nude woman raises her head at the left of Édouard Manet’s small Olympia etching, with a maid holding a bouquet at the right and a black cat farther beyond. The pale body forms a strong horizontal presence. The compressed arrangement brings the figures into close proximity, allowing the familiar subject to acquire a concentrated graphic force within a modest plate.

Created in 1867, the etching revisits the subject of Manet’s celebrated painting without reproducing its full color. Worked lines and tonal contrasts give the scene a distinct material character, making the reclining figure and surrounding company immediate in another medium. The image’s interest lies in that compact encounter, where an expansive painted subject can retain its presence through a smaller printed form. The figures remain closely connected while each contributes a different note to the composition.
