Description
Amedeo Modigliani portrays Jeanne Hébuterne beneath a broad black hat, with a necklace punctuating her purple clothing. Her head inclines gently, and the long neck carries the face away from the rounded shoulders. Blue eyes and red lips provide small accents within the restrained palette.
The hat’s dark sweep gives the portrait a strong upper edge, answered below by the curved neckline. The tilt of Jeanne’s head softens this structure, making the sitter feel quietly attentive. Modigliani’s simplified contours preserve the distinctive poise of the figure.
