Description
Amedeo Modigliani’s portrait of Pablo Picasso brings a warm red-orange face forward from a dark, roughly worked background. Black hair and clothing surround the pale collar, making the head the painting’s strongest point of focus. The features are economical and sharply organized.
Broad patches of color give the portrait a firm, almost carved presence. The face retains an individual character despite the abbreviated eyes and mouth. Modigliani makes the contrast between luminous skin and subdued surroundings do much of the expressive work.
