Description
Reclining Nude from the Back by Amedeo Modigliani follows the long curve of a figure resting across deep red furnishings. Seen largely from behind, the woman turns her face toward the viewer, bringing a quiet point of contact to a composition shaped by flowing contours. Warm flesh tones stand against the darker fabrics and the cool wall beyond.
Painted in 1917, the work gives the body an elongated, rhythmic presence. Modigliani simplifies the setting so that the sweep of the back, the angle of the arm and the tilted head carry the composition. The forms feel substantial, yet their continuous outlines also create an almost decorative movement across the surface.
Held by the Barnes Foundation, Reclining Nude from the Back combines repose with directness. Its carefully balanced colors and unhurried curves make the figure the center of an intimate, concentrated space.
