Description

A bearded man in a flat cap faces forward, supported by a crutch on either side. Broad ink lines establish his torso and the implements, with most of the paper left open around them. Manet gives the figure a direct graphic presence, allowing body and supports to remain clearly related without assigning an invented account of his injury or history.

Dated 1878, the work uses brush and lithographic ink on transfer paper. It is therefore a drawing prepared in a lithographic medium rather than an impression printed from a stone. The distinction preserves the direct marks on the sheet and the work’s place in a printmaking process. Manet gives a familiar human encounter a concentrated form, allowing the figure’s particular condition to be visible without turning it into a speculative story beyond the image.
