Description

A dark crescent of turbulent forms fills the fan-shaped composition of Paul Gauguin’s The Drama of the Sea. Churning textures and diagonal shapes move across the yellow ground, with jagged points at the upper edges. The unusual format concentrates the maritime subject into a strong pattern, letting the sea’s unrest become an encounter with movement, contrast and uncertainty.

Made in 1889 for the Volpini Suite, the zincograph was inspired by a story by Edgar Allan Poe. Dark printed marks stand against chrome-yellow paper, making the surface itself part of the work’s expressive character. Gauguin brings literary inspiration into a visual medium without requiring the image to become a straightforward illustrated passage. Its appeal lies in that translation, where a written suggestion can become an encounter shaped by forms, contrasts and the drama of a sea setting.
