Description
Paul Gauguin’s Martinique Pastorals places a standing woman beside an emphatic dark tree. Her long pale garment contrasts with the denser vegetation at the right, while an animal occupies the lower center. Hills and a smaller figure extend the scene behind her. Yellow paper remains visible through the drawn marks, making the setting an arrangement of strong contrasts rather than a continuous painted panorama.
Made in 1889, the zincograph belongs to the Volpini Suite. Its medium allows the character of drawing to remain visible while giving the image the unity of a print. Gauguin’s pastoral title encourages attention to the relationship between people and their surroundings, but the composition is also concerned with the surface itself. Human subjects and landscape become interdependent parts of a compact design, held together through contrasts of line, texture and open paper.
