Description

A seated woman holds her head in her hands in Paul Gauguin’s Human Misery, a woodcut dated 1898–99. Dark arms and hair concentrate attention around the bowed figure on the right, while curved branches and patterned terrain spread behind her. The gesture gives the title an immediate human focus without explaining the cause of distress. Her withdrawn posture contrasts with the active rhythms of the surrounding landscape.

The print was made on delicate tissue paper, but its dark shapes give the image considerable weight. Carved interruptions and broad contrasts connect the figure to the setting while keeping her inward movement distinct. Unlike a fully narrated scene, the work leaves the woman’s circumstances open, allowing the viewer to respond to the posture itself. The landscape does not simply decorate the emotion; its repeated curves help sustain the image’s tense, enclosed atmosphere.
