Description
Winged Putto Holding the Base of a Cross concentrates on a small child bending into a supporting action. The legs fold beneath the body, the head inclines forward and a wing rises behind, while part of the cross enters at the right edge. Red chalk and white accents work against blue-gray paper, giving the compact body a warm, rounded presence within the surrounding open field.
The drawing is attributed to the circle of Titian, preserving its relationship to his artistic environment without asserting his own hand. Its intimate focus allows a supporting figure to become an independent subject. Rather than presenting a complete religious narrative, the sheet attends to the connection between the child’s body and the cross, finding visual interest in the balance of gesture, scale and adjoining forms.
