Description
A broad yellow straw hat frames the young girl’s profile in Auguste Renoir’s Young Girl with a Hat. A pale blue ribbon, softly lit shoulders and pink bodice give the portrait delicate changes of color. Behind her, a mottled green-and-gold ground keeps the setting loose rather than distracting from the sitter. Her turned head makes the encounter quiet and unforced, balancing the strong shape of the brim with the subtler modeling of the face.
Painted around 1890 in oil on canvas, the work makes the familiar subject of a child portrait absorbing through small differences of expression and emphasis. Renoir gives the image a balance of presence and informality: the sitter is carefully observed, but the treatment remains supple. The hat provides a strong outer shape, while the subtler modeling of the face invites a closer, slower look.
