Description

A huge stony arch supports a golden tower amid the swirling atmosphere of Queen Mab’s Cave, painted by an imitator of J. M. W. Turner. Tiny colorful figures occupy the lower scene beneath dim green-blue surroundings. Architecture emerges from the haze without becoming entirely solid, giving the fantasy landscape a shifting presence between a recognizable place and an imaginative vision.

Made after 1846 in oil on fabric, the work is a reduced copy of a Turner painting first exhibited that year. Its attribution belongs to an anonymous imitator rather than securely to Turner himself. The fairy subject connects to a world of dreams and imaginative transformation, while the painted surface lets light and color carry the encounter. The work’s interest lies in that union of recognizable forms and an atmosphere that keeps them partly beyond ordinary certainty.
