Description

The Pigeon Tower at Bellevue anchors a Provençal landscape with a sturdy ochre building beneath a blue roof. Green brush gathers around the tower, while the broad blue sky occupies much of the upper picture and warm earth spreads across the foreground. Paul Cézanne makes the architecture substantial without isolating it, balancing the tower’s upright form against the landscape’s wider bands of color.

Painted in 1890 in oil on fabric, the work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its curatorial account emphasizes three horizontal color zones: blue sky, pale buildings and the burnt-orange earth of Provence. The painting makes those divisions feel connected rather than merely stacked, allowing each to establish a different depth and material character within a landscape pared down to its essential relationships.
