Description

Wheel-worn tracks curve through the open foreground of William Merritt Chase’s The Old Road to the Sea, leading toward a blue horizon. Warm grasses and pale ground sit beneath clusters of peach-tinted clouds, making the landscape feel broad and sunlit. The modest road offers a direction through the scene without turning the view into an account of a particular journey.

Painted around 1893, the oil belongs to Chase’s work at Shinnecock on Long Island. Varied brushwork gives the low dunes and sky their separate character, while the distant sea brings the landscape a quieter horizontal rhythm. The painting’s interest lies in the meeting of an ordinary route and an expansive atmosphere. A path worn into the ground becomes a means of looking outward, allowing the familiar surface of the land to open gradually toward water and light.
