Description

Diego Velázquez’s Portrait of the Jester Calabazas, painted around 1631–32, gives a court entertainer the scale and presence of a formal full-length likeness. Dressed in black, Calabazas stands with one leg crossing in front, holding a pinwheel and a small portrait of a woman. His grin and sidelong attention keep the figure animated within the dark surrounding room.

The objects suggest the changing fortunes of love, but the sitter’s presence is larger than their symbolic associations. Velázquez uses a format associated with authority to portray someone whose position at court was very different from that of a ruler. The image directs attention to the individual rather than reducing him to his role as an entertainer. Its force comes from that sustained encounter, where costume, expression and the full standing body make Calabazas unmistakably present.
