Description
In The Supper at Emmaus, Christ sits at the center of a table between two disciples, the lit gathering held within a shadowed interior. Rembrandt gives The Supper at Emmaus a concentrated human arrangement, making shared space and attention central to the biblical subject. The brighter table group draws the eye inward, while the surrounding darkness lets the encounter feel distinct from the room around it.
Made in 1654 with etching, burin and drypoint, the print brings different kinds of line into one tonal structure. The familiar story concerns the disciples’ recognition of Christ at supper, but the image’s force also lies in the close relationship between the three figures. Rembrandt gives that moment a tangible setting, joining spiritual revelation with the ordinary intimacy of people gathered at a table.
