Description
In Three Studies of a Lion, a prone body occupies the left of the sheet while two head studies appear above and to the right. Eugène Delacroix gathers different approaches to the animal within one working space, connecting a whole form with closer observations. The drawing invites attention to those variations, allowing the creature’s presence to develop through separate studies rather than one fully resolved scene.
The drawing uses graphite on tracing paper mounted on wove paper. Its light working medium gives the studies a material identity distinct from a completed animal scene. The work’s interest lies in the process of looking, where a lion can be considered through several related observations and where the gathered marks preserve attention to the creature without requiring a dramatic event or an elaborate surrounding landscape.
