Description
Presentation in the Temple arranges a sacred encounter along a vertical sheet. Steps rise at the left, while a kneeling mother below faces the elders standing above her and the infant held near the middle. Peter Paul Rubens leaves much of the surrounding paper open, allowing the figures’ positions and the changes in brown ink and wash to guide the eye through the meeting.
This undated sheet is made with pen, brush and brown ink on pale tan paper. Its combination of drawn edges and broader tonal areas gives different roles to gesture, body and surrounding space. The religious subject is approached through the arrangement of interacting figures, making the study engaging both as a narrative image and as an exploration of how a complex encounter can be organized on a page.
