Description

Cornelis Claesz Anslo sits in a hat behind an open book, a lifted hand giving the portrait an active gesture. Rembrandt connects the Mennonite preacher’s identity with a setting of reading and address, bringing face, hand and page into one encounter. The table places the sitter close to the viewer, while the open volume gives the composition a quieter counterweight to his movement.

Made in 1641, the etching lets a named individual’s presence emerge through the relationship between study and communication. The book is part of the arrangement rather than merely a label for occupation, joining the sitter’s posture to the space before him. Rembrandt makes the portrait engaging through this balance, holding the preacher as both a particular person and a figure whose attention extends beyond himself.
