Description
The Rhinoceros by Albrecht Dürer gives an unfamiliar animal an unforgettable visual presence. Its heavy body appears encased in patterned plates, with a prominent horn and a small, alert eye set above the lowered head. The legs, folds of skin and elaborate surface markings make the creature seem both solidly physical and wonderfully strange.
Created in 1515, the woodcut holds the animal in a clear side view, allowing its shape and texture to command attention. The dense pattern of lines contrasts with the open background, while the inscription above adds another register to the image. Dürer’s rhinoceros remains compelling through this combination of imposing weight and extraordinary ornament, turning a single animal into a richly detailed world of forms.
