Description
In Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road, Rembrandt places low buildings at the left and center, with a large leafy tree rising at the right. The road bends through the foreground, giving the eye a route toward the buildings rather than a fixed barrier before them. The gabled roofs and spreading foliage set different rhythms within the same rural setting, joining the geometry of shelter with the irregular forms of growth.
Dated 1650, this etching and drypoint is the third of three states. The work makes a modest roadside arrangement sufficient for sustained attention, with the tree lending height to the low band of buildings. Rembrandt gives the scene variety through proportion and direction. The curving approach connects open ground with inhabited space, allowing a quiet landscape to acquire movement without requiring a dramatic event.
