Description
Ecce Homo by Albrecht Dürer brings Christ’s presentation to a crowd into a sharply organized architectural setting. Christ stands near the building’s entrance, attended by figures who direct attention toward him. Below and around the threshold, the gathering of spectators supplies a range of gestures and reactions, making the public encounter feel crowded and tense.
Made around 1498–99 for The Large Passion, this woodcut contrasts the structure’s firm edges with the shifting movements of the people. Large folds of drapery and strongly marked faces bring the foreground close, while the building gives the episode a clear stage. Dürer’s arrangement keeps the exposed principal figure at the heart of a scene whose emotional weight depends on the surrounding response.
