Description
Albert Bierstadt’s Canadian Rockies (Lake Louise) sets a blue-gray lake beneath a powerful wall of mountains. A dark slope rises at the left, while snow-covered peaks appear farther back under a pale violet sky. Fallen timber and pines at the right interrupt the smooth foreground water, giving the near shore a rough, tangible texture against the more distant, luminous heights.
Painted around 1889 in oil on paper mounted to board, the work brings the scale of the Canadian Rockies into a compact landscape. The eye moves from the dark foreground details toward the lighter mountain distance, following successive changes in color and atmosphere. Water and rock provide contrasting kinds of stillness: the broad lake opens the view, while the steep surrounding forms give it enclosure and weight.
