Description
Study of a Tree gives a single gnarled trunk the force of a larger landscape. Its diagonal rise leads toward the upper part of the picture, while a twisted branch reaches across the middle. The subdued gray tones bring bark, branching structure and the wooded background into a close relationship, allowing the tree’s irregular shape to dominate without isolating it from its surroundings.
Albert Bierstadt painted this study around 1864 in oil on paper mounted on board. The concentrated subject invites attention to the weight and direction of a living form rather than to a sweeping mountain view. Thick and slender passages answer one another across the surface, and the branching silhouette offers a network of movements within an otherwise restrained woodland scene.
