Description
In this Siege of Gibraltar study, John Singleton Copley places two standing officers at the left and center and a kneeling officer at the right. The pale, open sheet gives their different heights room to register, letting the group be read as a pattern of upright and lowered bodies. Chalk marks concentrate on the figures rather than building a complete surrounding battlefield.
Made in 1785–86 with black and white chalk on blue paper, the study uses the colored ground as an active part of the figures’ definition. Dark marks and pale accents establish forms while leaving the surrounding space comparatively open. The drawing offers an encounter with the preparation behind a large history painting. Its appeal lies in seeing the group considered at close range, where standing and kneeling bodies become a means of directing attention and building a scene’s dramatic structure.
