Description
Norton Joseph Knatchbull stands facing forward in a full-length study, with an arm resting near a table. The boy’s jacket and trousers are indicated within a ruled grid, so the individual figure and the working structure of the sheet remain visible together. The spare surroundings keep the pose clear, allowing the balance between the upright body and the supporting arm to become the drawing’s central relationship.
John Singleton Copley made the study in 1800–1802 for The Knatchbull Family. Black chalk, white heightening and graphite on dark blue paper provide contrasting means of describing form. Unlike a completed group portrait, this sheet gives one sitter sustained attention, retaining the exploratory marks and measured divisions that belong to the process of arranging a figure within a larger composition.
