Description

Sir Edward Knatchbull stands with his legs apart in John Singleton Copley’s study for The Knatchbull Family. One arm extends outward, while a long diagonal object gives the other side of the figure a contrasting direction. A grid crosses the gray working sheet, making the drawing’s role in preparing a larger composition visible alongside the carefully considered stance.

Made in 1800–1802, the sheet combines black chalk, graphite and white accents on dark blue paper. The colored ground lets both dark and pale marks take part in defining the figure, giving the study a distinct visual presence. Copley uses drawing to consider a person within the demands of a larger painting. The work offers a close encounter with that process, where the sitter’s individuality and the composition’s structure are developed together rather than treated as separate concerns.
