Description
The Wrecked Longboat brings bodies, boat and surrounding water into a broad, unsettled arrangement. Prone figures lie toward the left, while others rise at the right, and an angled spar cuts across the scene. John Singleton Copley’s drawing concentrates the crisis into a low, spreading group, with the changes in bodily position giving the eye several routes through the composition.
Made in 1785–86 in pen, brown ink and black chalk, the sheet is a study for The Siege of Gibraltar. Its focus on the wrecked boat isolates a particular episode from the larger historical subject. The relatively open drawing allows the relationships between figures and vessel to remain exposed, making the scene’s structure legible even where individual forms are only partly resolved.
