Description

The Kermis at Hoboken spreads a village festival across an animated square. Drinking, dancing and games mingle among barrels, wagons and clusters of neighbors, while buildings and a church tower anchor the crowded scene. Engraved by Frans Hogenberg after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the print turns communal celebration into a field of countless small encounters. The eye can follow one group, then discover another activity unfolding a few steps away.

Dating to about 1559, the design balances the solidity of the village with the restless movement of its inhabitants. Fine engraved lines distinguish roofs, clothing and gestures without separating the people from their surroundings. Rather than reducing the festival to a single event, the composition presents a whole community in motion, with ordinary pleasures and social exchanges occupying the same lively space.
