Description
A seated shepherd anchors Jean-François Millet’s drawing of a man, his dog, and his sheep. The shepherd occupies the left-center of the scene with his staff, while the animals gather to the right and the dog remains close beside him. This arrangement gives the resting figure a continuing relationship to the flock, even though the work of tending it is momentarily still.
Conté crayon on wove paper allows Millet to suggest the sheep’s woolly forms and the shepherd’s solidity through contrasting densities of line and tone. Small objects in the foreground bring the scene close to the ground of everyday use. Without a dramatic event, the drawing finds its subject in companionship and watchfulness, giving a pause in rural labor its own absorbing presence.
