Description
A large sailing vessel rises above lower, oared galleys in Fleet of Galleys Escorted by a Caravel. Billowing sails and dramatic clouds give the scene a sense of movement, while the smaller craft extend the voyage into the distance. In this print after Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the different vessels become part of a wider rhythm of water, wind and travel.
Made between 1561 and 1565, Fleet of Galleys Escorted by a Caravel belongs to The Sailing Vessels. Frans Huys rendered Bruegel’s design through engraving and etching, using line to give ships and water their separate character. The image’s appeal lies in the combination of maritime subject and printmaking precision. The vessels remain particular things to look at, while their grouping makes the scene an encounter with navigation, distance and movement across the sea.
