Description
Three Caravels in a Rising Squall with Arion on a Dolphin spreads billowing sails across a restless sea. The vessels occupy different positions among the waves, while large clouds give the weather a commanding presence. Small Arion and his dolphin appear low in the composition. Their scale makes the myth an intimate counterpoint to the ships, joining a story of extraordinary rescue with the more practical spectacle of navigation.
Frans Huys made the engraving and etching after a design by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Published by Hieronymus Cock in the 1561–65 Sailing Vessels series, it gives the sea an active role rather than treating it as a neutral backdrop. Ships, weather and myth share the composition. The print’s fascination lies in their coexistence, with practical maritime structures set alongside a story of rescue that belongs to a different order of experience.
