Description
Landscape with Pilgrims at Emmaus places a biblical journey within the expansive terrain of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Large Landscapes. A tall tree shelters the three travelers on the right, while a river valley opens to towns and distant hills on the left. Produced around 1555–56 through the work of Bruegel and the printmakers Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum, the image combines etching and engraving.
The title refers to the travelers who encounter Christ on the road to Emmaus, but the surrounding world occupies much of the composition. The small figures belong to the landscape rather than standing apart from it. Closely worked lines lead the eye from the sheltered path into the extensive valley beyond. The spiritual journey is experienced through an earthly setting, with the scale of the terrain quietly enlarging the story.
