Description
In The Diggers, two workers bend toward the earth with their spades. One figure works lower at the left, while the other rises more prominently at the right, giving the repeated task a varied bodily rhythm. Millet connects their different positions through a shared stretch of ground, making labor visible as an arrangement of bodies and tools.
This impression of The Diggers is an etching on heavy wove paper in the first of four states, with Auguste Delâtre credited as printer. The distinction between printer and artist preserves the work’s actual roles rather than treating the collaboration as joint design. Its interest lies in the weight and direction of effort carried through the two figures.
