Description
John Constable’s A Mill Near Colchester, dated 1833, places a hilltop mill within a landscape animated by wind. Its sails are reefed, while moving clouds and the foreground tree’s leaves suggest unsettled weather. Dark, densely worked washes near the front contrast with thinner blue tones farther back, giving the composition a strong change of atmosphere as the eye moves toward the mill.
Constable developed the layout from sketches made at the site about fifteen years earlier, combining remembered observation with an energetic watercolor technique. Scratched-out accents recover light from the painted surface, suggesting sunlight breaking across rain-washed forms. The sheet also preserves squaring for transfer, while a color test on the reverse belongs to a separate working view. These traces of preparation coexist with the landscape’s immediacy, making the weather feel active rather than merely described.
