Description
Faith places a woman holding a cross within a church interior, while kneeling people and rows of benches extend the scene around her. Tall pillars and vaults give the congregation an imposing setting. Bruegel’s design makes an abstract virtue visible within a shared religious world, bringing an allegorical figure into relationship with the people and architecture surrounding her.
Engraved by Philips Galle around 1559–60, the work belongs to The Virtues. Its printed surface brings Bruegel’s conception into a detailed network of lines, giving the allegorical subject enough particularity to sustain close observation. The image’s interest lies in the meeting of a named principle and human experience. An idea is made visible without being reduced to a single ordinary person, allowing the viewer to consider how spiritual commitment can take form within a wider community.
