Description
The Scolding Woman and the Cackling Hen brings a household dispute into contact with an animal comparison. Within a circular image, a gesturing older figure confronts another person, while the hen appears near the lower right. The enclosing inscription makes the scene feel especially compact. Human conduct and the bird provide the essential relationship, turning an everyday exchange into the subject of a pointed visual saying.
Jan Wierix engraved the work after Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s design around 1568. Engraved line gives the small incidents a clear presence without requiring an elaborate narrative. The image’s appeal lies in the movement between literal subjects and the comparison suggested by their association. A woman and a hen become more than separate motifs: together they turn a commonplace judgment into something that can be examined, remembered and reconsidered through looking.
