Description
The Virgin and Child stand at the center of Madonna and Child with Saints, attributed by the museum to Giovanni Bellini and his workshop. Painted about 1505–10 in tempera and oil on wood, the broad composition places them between four saints against an expansive sky. A marble parapet crosses the foreground, giving the sacred gathering a firm boundary between its own space and the viewer.
The saints are identified, from left to right, as Peter, Catherine of Alexandria, Lucy and John the Baptist. Their presence enlarges the scene beyond an intimate mother-and-child image, while the central relationship remains its focus. Bellini’s name appears on a folded paper at the parapet, but the workshop qualification preserves the collaborative context in which the picture was probably made. The arrangement creates a measured encounter among figures whose separate identities contribute to a unified devotional scene.
