Description

Roman Landscape opens across golden-brown terrain toward a ruin on a central hill. A figure follows a foreground path, while standing trees at the right and an arched bridge far to the left give the view separate points of interest. Blue and ochre clouds spread above the distant skyline. The arrangement balances the landscape’s breadth with smaller forms that suggest routes through it.

Dated around 1850–52, the oil painting is attributed to Arnold Böcklin by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That qualification preserves the museum’s degree of certainty about the maker. Warm land and cooler sky give the view different kinds of openness, while the trees and ruined architecture provide firmer shapes within them. The nearby path offers a modest human scale, connecting the broad setting with the slower movement of a figure crossing the ground.
