Description

John Constable’s Stoke-by-Nayland, painted around 1810–11, brings a Suffolk village into an oil sketch of changing masses and open space. A church tower rises at the far left, while a substantial cluster of trees gathers toward the center-right. Brown foreground fields and a gray-blue cloudy sky give the setting a broad atmosphere, with the painterly surface keeping the landscape’s parts visibly connected.

The village’s church of St. Mary supplies a particular focus within this Suffolk setting. Constable explored Stoke-by-Nayland in drawings during 1810–11, and this is the earliest of three oil sketches of the subject. The painting belongs to a sustained examination of the place. A built landmark, a nearer passage of ground and the space between them become legible through their shared atmosphere, with the direction of the eye connecting what the paint holds together.
