Description

Shepherdess Seated on a Rock places a woman at the right beneath dense foliage, wearing a blue skirt and a gray cloak. Sheep graze across the left, giving her seated presence a wider pastoral setting. Millet brings the resting figure and the nearby animals into one landscape, allowing the scene’s interest to emerge from their quiet relation rather than a dramatic incident.

Painted in 1856 in oil on wood, this work belongs to a pair of closely developed versions of the subject. Millet made a second painting after the artist Edward Wheelwright admired the first, then worked back and forth between them, using each to advance the other. The Metropolitan Museum preserves one of those versions. That history makes the painting more than a mechanical repetition, showing how a familiar composition could remain active through a process of renewed attention.
