Description

Alfonso d’Este appears as a seated, bearded figure in this portrait copied after Titian. Dark burgundy-black clothing contrasts with golden sleeves, while the arms rest near the chair and the face remains closely present against a brown background. The half-length arrangement gives the duke a composed public likeness, allowing rich clothing and restrained posture to contribute to his appearance.

Made in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, the work follows Titian rather than claiming his own hand. That distinction makes the portrait an example of a design whose appeal extended beyond its original making. The sitter’s appearance remains the image’s human center, yet its handling belongs to another painter’s interpretation. Looking can move between those two relationships: a historical ruler given a public presence, and a composition preserved because another maker found its arrangement worth carrying forward.
