Description
Doge Andrea Gritti presents the elderly Venetian ruler in an oil portrait from the workshop of Titian. His face turns toward the left beneath a pointed red cap, while a dark, gold-patterned robe and pale collar trim give the bust a formal presence. The brown background keeps the figure closely framed. The workshop qualification identifies the painting’s documented authorship rather than simply assigning it to Titian himself.
A state portrait must make an individual recognizable while also conveying the office he holds. Costume, posture and the emphasis given to the face contribute differently to that task, allowing personal likeness and authority to occupy the same image. The dates 1455–1538 refer to Andrea Gritti’s lifespan, not an established date for this painting. Approached on its documented terms, the work offers an encounter with a ruler’s image and with the workshop tradition through which such a likeness could be preserved.
