Description

Deep shadow gives this impression of The Entombment by Rembrandt its particular character. Human forms are only faintly discernible near the lower center within an arched space, so the eye must adjust to the darkness before the gathering begins to emerge. The enclosing architecture and subdued figures make the scene feel concentrated, with little bright detail to separate one presence from another.

Made about 1654, the print combines etching, drypoint and engraving and belongs to the second of four states. Its religious subject is approached through a strongly darkened graphic field rather than a clearly lit description of every action. Rembrandt allows visibility itself to become part of the experience, asking the viewer to remain with forms that resist an immediate reading. The image’s gravity depends on this close relation between the burial scene and its surrounding shadow.
